“Ironman” Dave passes the “Iron” to Martin
Some of you may know Dave Whitlock, he has worked here for over five years. He was our best customer. One day when he came in, we chatted and he told me he was retired so I casually asked him if he was interested in helping us out in the store. His favorite sports are triathlon in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter. Working here was a great fit, because after retiring Dave realized that he couldn't train all day. He needed something to occupy his non-training time. Dave is a very experienced triathlete and an accomplished "Ironman". While cross country skiing he met Amy. She lives in Michigan. After having carried on a long distance relationship it was time he moved to Michigan. We miss him. Amy and I think he would be a really great personal trainer. If you would like to give him a try or if you would like to stay in touch with him, his e-mail address is ameliawilks@att.net. Tell him that I sent you. Martin Colman is 62 years old, and he was born in England. As a young family man he introduced his kids to cross country skiing at a local Toronto park. To encourage his son, Doug, to be a cross country ski racer, Martin found himself training for masters cross country racing. That put him in search for an off season training sport like cycling. But because Lorna, his wife was not confident balancing on a bicycle by herself, he was drawn to a tandem bicycle. After retiring Martin had more time on his hands, he was motivated and became very fit. "I came down to the store to buy a pair of roller skis and I asked Saul if there was an opportunity for me to work here part time." Martin says that when he works here he gets to meet new people everyday who love cycling and cross country skiing. It's a very social and dynamic situation. This is his second career and he works here part time so he can spend time with Lorna when she's not working. "I’ve never worked in retail before. As I see it, the magic ingredient here comes from Saul and Beverley. In most other stores you don't get the intimate service, respect and understanding that you're always given here. But it's more than that, you have a genuine interest in the customer. It makes me happy just being in a place that loves doing what you're doing. There’s a kind of enjoyment factor here you just don't find in other stores. We get to talk to customers about what's going on in their life. It's like the village toy shop, it's a small town store. It's great to have such influence with our customers. They enjoy the unique stuff they buy here."
Martin commutes 20km each way to the store from his home. When I asked Martin for a picture to put with this article he and Lorna rode down to the store on her day off.
Martin says that we’re all set up for waxing skis now, so bring'm in.
